Nestled in the Victorian Village of Ferndale, California , is the home of three impressive new Bocce courts, all built to regulation standards by community volunteers and maintained by the Ferndale Bocce Club.
The availability of the Bocce courts, located in Fireman's Park, which is a central location, provides an opportunity for senior citizens to engage in an outdoor
activity that is both mentally and physically stimulating.
Bocce (see Wiki) , being
conducive to mutual play by all ages, increases the association and
communication between generations. In addition, the availability of the
courts enables Bocce tournaments, bringing
visitors to Ferndale providing a positive impact on the local economy.
The construction, maintenance and management of the Bocce courts was
financed through donations, tournaments, and community volunteers under
the oversight of a Bocce volunteer committee.
Each court is 13 by 91 feet and built to last with concrete curbs lined
with wood rails. The courts are bedded with 8 inches of compacted road
base overlaid with three inches of crushed oyster shell/clay loam and
one half inch of oyster shell flour for the finished rolling surface.
One court is wheel chair accessable, to enable those who are
wheelchair bound the ability to enjoy playing the game.
The courts are open to the general public for personal use and may be periodically reserved for tournaments and/or group activities.
